National AKI summit/report: The UKK AKI SIG hosted a face-to-face AKI Summit in Birmingham (September 2023).  It brought together multi-professionals, cross-specialty and care sectors, to ensure delegates were representative of the AKI workforce.  The SIG is currently completing an overview report of the summit, which includes 20 recommendations that will be endorsed, badged and circulated by partner organisations (RCP, SAM, BHS, RMG, ANN UK, BGS, ICS) to promote consistent systemwide AKI care.

Standardise lab AKI detection/reporting:

  • Collaborated with other stakeholders (ACB, GIRFT Pathology) to publish National guidance to standardise UK laboratory AKI detection and reporting (May 2023).
  • Conducted a national survey of laboratories to investigate GIRFT Pathology/Renal finding a 3-to-5-fold variation in AKI incidence across the country, that could not be explained by variation in care.
  • Found variation in creatinine assays and AKI algorithm used, explained variations; national recommendations made in response to this.

Supported development/utilisation of AKI data portals/dashboard:  Supported the UK Renal Registry with the development of the AKI Master Patient Index (unique worldwide) and continue to promote its use to support and drive quality care and improvement.  Worked with RSTP to link MPI data with patient outcome and service use data (HES and SUS), still in progress.

Responded formally to NICE evidence surveillance report: to help secure review/update of contrast nephropathy section of NICE AKI guidelines; NICE is actively reviewing this.

First education package being developed in collaboration with UKKA Education Project Manager.
