Lifetime Achievement Award

The UKKA Lifetime Achievement Award is a prestigious honour that pays tribute to exceptional individuals who have left an indelible mark on the kidney community through their remarkable contributions to academic medicine, clinical care, education, and leadership. Established in 2023, this award stands as a symbol of recognition and appreciation for those who have tirelessly dedicated their careers to improving the quality of life for kidney patients.

The UKKA Lifetime Achievement Award embodies the spirit of gratitude and admiration, celebrating those who have dedicated their lives to advancing the field of nephrology and ultimately improving the lives of kidney patients. It serves as a lasting tribute to their outstanding contributions and an inspiration to future generations of kidney healthcare professionals.

The inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award Lecture was presented at UK Kidney Week 2024 in Edinburgh by Dr Dwomoa (Jo) Adu, on APOL1 gene variants and CKD in Africans and their descendants.

Raine Award

The Raine Award was established in memory of Tony Raine, Professor of Renal Medicine at Barts, following his tragically early death in 1995. This prestigious annual award is made to a relatively junior investigator who has not reached consultant grade or senior lecturer for non-clinical scientists and who has made a significant contribution to renal research. The awardee usually makes a presentation of the work which has led up to the award at UK Kidney Week, and will also receive a full article-processing charge waiver to publish one article in BMC Nephrology, where they are listed as an author, and their authorship fulfils ICMJE authorship criteria. The prize is valid for one year, and publication of the manuscript is subject to editorial assessment and peer-review.

Walls Bursaries

The Walls Bursaries were established in memory of the late Professor John Walls, President of the Renal Association 1995-1998, who died in 2001. Their aim is to help Association members to spend short periods (e.g. weeks or months) at other centres, generally outside the UK, to learn new laboratory techniques or gain new clinical skills.

Two bursaries are usually available each year, one for a clinician and one for a non-clinician. Applicants should have made a significant contribution to the field of Academic Nephrology and the award can only be made once to any one individual. £1,000 is awarded to help Association members to present work visit an overseas laboratory or clinical Nephrology unit (often these will be collaborating centres).

Lockwood Award

The Lockwood Award was established in memory of the late Dr Martin Lockwood, a distinguished investigator and active member of the Renal Association, who died in 1999. These Awards are the successor to the Milne-Muehrcke award. £1,000 is awarded to help UK Kidney Association members to present work and combine this with a visit to a collaborating laboratory or clinical nephrology unit overseas.
