This new study aimed to determine what characteristics are associated with COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the CKD population. The authors found that people of younger age, minority ethnicity and social deprivation were associated with slower vaccine uptake and lower final coverage. These associations were consistent across the CKD population.

The UKKA enabled the identification of people on KRT by contributing UK Renal Registry (UKRR) data to the secure OpenSAFELY platform. The paper authors included UK Kidney Association staff members Dorothea Nistch, Retha Steenkamp and Shalini Santhakumaran.

This study demonstrates that targeted interventions are needed to identify and remove barriers to vaccine uptake. This work forms part of an ongoing collaboration with OpenSAFELY, which allows UKRR data to be linked to primary and secondary care data covering 24 million people.
